Violin & Viola Practice Mentorship
Clearer Practice. Better Progress.

You pay for 1 hour of elite private lessons. Who is guiding your child through the other 167 hours of the week?
You pay for 1 hour of elite private lessons. Who is guiding your child through the other 167 hours of the week?
As parents, we want the absolute best for our kids. We invest money into premium private music lessons, navigate local Walnut traffic, and want them to succeed.
But then the daily reality hits at home.
Your child spends 1 hour a week with their private teacher, and 167 hours left completely alone to figure out how to practice.
Here is the truth: Private lessons introduce new concepts, but those 167 hours are where the actual progress happens. If home practice is filled with mistakes, frustration, or avoidance, the entire investment is lost.
As a professional violinist and as a parent who has raised a child through the delicate balance of high musical goals and daily family life, I know exactly what happens during those 167 hours. Frustration builds, arguments start, and talented kids want to quit simply because practicing alone is too hard.
I bridge the six days between your child's private lessons. I do not teach new material. I eliminate the home practice battles and ensure your private education investment actually pays off.
This is a focused, 100% live, 1-on-1 online practice mentorship program for violin and viola students who need professional guidance between private lessons. We meet your child on-screen to build independent habits right from home.
Live & 1-on-1: No pre-recorded video loops. Real-time professional guidance when they need it most.
100% Online: Zero driving. One simple, permanent link to bookmark. No apps to download, and no passwords to remember.
Teacher-Approved: We support your private teacher's assignments. We do not replace them.
What Makes This Different
I support the private teacher. I do not replace lessons.
No conflicting instructions. I do not alter repertoire, pieces, fingerings, or technical styles.
Pure optimization. I help students put their private teacher's instruction into action beautifully so they return to class fully prepared.
For the Student:
I know exactly what to practice today.
Difficult passages are broken down clearly.
I feel successful rather than frustrated.
For the Parent:
Practice time is no longer a daily battle.
Someone experienced is monitoring progress between lessons.
I don't need musical expertise to help my child.
For the Private Teacher:
The student arrives at the next lesson fully prepared.
No conflicting instructions or altered techniques.
Their specific teaching philosophy is strictly respected.

Meet Your Practice Mentor: Mr. Lai
Hi, I'm Mr. Lai. I help violin and viola students turn home practice into consistent, happy progress by reinforcing their private teacher’s instructions.
20+ Years of Experience: I have spent over two decades as an orchestral performer, audition committee member, and active chamber musician. Including commercial recording credits as a string quartet artist for new contemporary album releases.
Audition & Exam Insight: I successfully guide students through all levels of CM, ABRSM, youth orchestra, and music college auditions.
The Parent Perspective: Most importantly, as a parent of a 16-year-old, I know firsthand the delicate balance between high musical goals and daily family life. I created this program to bring professional, high-level guidance right into your living room to ease parental stress.
No long-term contracts. Pause or change your plan anytime with a 14-day notice. Billed automatically on the 1st of each month via secure QuickBooks Online Autopay.
The Introductory Practice & Strategy Session: $35 (A one-time, 20-minute active virtual session to try out the mentorship workflow with zero ongoing commitment. Enrolling within 7 days waives this fee by crediting it to your first monthly bill).
The Monthly Mentorship Membership: $175/month (Includes weekly live sessions (1x per week), weekly practice plan, weekly video checkpoints (1x per week), and monthly progress reports).
The 5th-Week & Holiday Policy: Your monthly tuition is billed as a flat, predictable fee. Some months have 4 weeks, and other months have a "5th week." We use those extra 5th-week sessions to automatically balance out major national holidays when the studio is closed. Because it perfectly evens out over the year, your monthly bill stays exactly the same every single month, and you never have to track confusing holiday adjustments.
Q: Will this replace my child’s current private teacher?
A: Absolutely not. We are your teacher's biggest fans! This program is designed strictly to support your child’s existing teacher. We make sure their homework is practiced beautifully between lessons so they return to class fully prepared.
Q: Do we really need this if my child already has a teacher?
A: Yes. Private lessons introduce new things once a week, but your child is left alone for the other 167 hours of the week. We bridge that 6-day gap so your child never wastes days practicing a mistake repeatedly.
Q: How is this different from extra music lessons?
A: Regular lessons introduce new pieces. We do not teach new music, and we never change your teacher's specific fingerings or style. We act purely as a guided practice partner to help them finish the homework they already have.
Q: What is the weekly video checkpoint? Do I need to record their whole practice?
A: No, definitely not. The checkpoint is not for tracking or surveillance. It is simply a maximum 3-minute video showing one important moment from your child's weekly practice where they need a quick mid-week check.
To keep this fast and friction-free, the video must follow these parameters:
Length: Maximum 3 minutes.
Focus: One specific challenge only.
What to send (Examples): A difficult shifting passage, a rhythm problem, a bow distribution issue, a specific scale passage, or a short lesson preparation excerpt.
What NOT to send: An entire concerto, a full lesson recording, or multiple separate videos. You send this single spot mid-week, and I send written feedback within 48 hours to make sure they don't get stuck before their next private lesson.
Q: Do I need to download apps or use passwords?
A: Not at all. We use Google Meet, which runs directly in your internet browser. Once you book your Introductory Session, you will receive a video link. When you officially sign up for the ongoing monthly mentorship program, you will receive your permanent weekly workspace link. Your child simply clicks that link at their scheduled time. No passwords, no app downloads, and no last-minute tech scrambles.
Q: Do you offer longer sessions for advanced students?
A: Yes. Our standard 20-minute bursts are best for daily habits. However, advanced students preparing for auditions, Certificate of Merit (CM), or youth orchestra can request 40-minute sessions. We do this by reserving back-to-back calendar slots. Just let us know on your setup form!
Q: Do parents need to sit in on the session?
A: You are always welcome to watch, but it is completely optional! Many parents use this 20-minute window to cook dinner, catch up on chores, or enjoy a quiet moment of absolute peace while we handle the heavy lifting.
Q: What if my child is sick or we have an emergency?
A: We get it, family life happens! We have a simple 24-hour cancellation window. If there is a sudden illness or emergency, just text us before the session starts. We will work with you to find an open makeup slot within the current month to keep their momentum going.
Q: Can adults join this program?
A: Yes! We warmly welcome busy adult students who are learning on their own, returning to the violin after years away, or looking for friendly accountability. The pricing and structure are exactly the same.
Q: How should I explain this to my child so they don’t fight it?
A: Keep it light and supportive! Tell them: "We’re trying an online practice coach to help you save time. You don't have to practice all alone anymore. When you get stuck on a hard part, you can ask them right away!" Most kids quickly realize this makes their practice time much shorter and less frustrating.
